CREATING AWARENESS
In Australia today, statistics show that one in five Australians are living with a disability of some type*.
Of the one in five people living with a disability, only 34% take part in at least thirty minutes of exercise each week, compared to 52% of people living without a disability. The recommended amount of exercise is thirty minutes a day. Rates of obesity, diabetes and complex health issues are also higher, which may be related to lack of activity. |
A further disadvantage is that the unemployment rate of people who live with a disability is triple our national unemployment rate and it is speculated that in some parts of Australia, it could be as high as 70%**.
Each week, Australian Disability Sport representatives visit public places including shopping centres, supermarkets and local council districts, making contact with thousands of Australians, showing them first-hand that people living with a disability have a valuable role to play in our society and that living a healthy and active life is very important.
